Looker Studio Pro Pricing for Agencies: Is It Worth It?

Looker Studio Pro pricing for agencies: what the per-user subscription costs, what it adds over the free tier, and when the upgrade pays off. With worked maths.

Cost comparison of free Looker Studio and Looker Studio Pro for an agency with several client dashboards

Looker Studio is free. Looker Studio Pro is not, and the bill depends on how you structure your client work, not only on how many people you have. This article shows how the Looker Studio Pro subscription is priced, what it adds, and how to work out whether it pays for itself in your agency.

Prices change. Treat every figure below as an illustration and confirm the current rate in the Google Cloud console before you decide.

What Looker Studio Pro costs and what you actually buy

Google has renamed Looker Studio back to Data Studio, so the paid tier now appears as Data Studio Pro in Google Cloud. Same product, same pricing model; most people still search for it as Looker Studio Pro.

Looker Studio Pro is billed through Google Cloud, not through a normal Google Workspace invoice. The pricing unit is a licence per user, per Google Cloud project, per month. At the time of writing, the list price was in the region of $9 per user per project per month. Check the Cloud console for the current figure and for any annual commitment terms.

Two parts of that sentence matter:

  • Per user. Only people who need Pro features hold a licence. Viewers can be a different story, depending on how you share content, so check this in your own setup.
  • Per project. If you run one Google Cloud project for the whole agency, you pay once per person. If you create a project per client, the same person can need a licence in each one.

Looker Studio Pro is not "Looker"

People searching "how much does Looker cost" often mix up two products:

Product What it is How it is priced
Looker Studio Free self-service reporting tool Free
Looker Studio Pro Paid tier of Looker Studio with admin and governance features Per user, per project, per month
Looker (the platform) Enterprise BI platform with a semantic modelling layer Custom quote from Google

For an agency that builds client dashboards on top of BigQuery, the realistic comparison is the first two. The full Looker platform is a different category of purchase.

What Pro adds over the free version

The charts, the connectors and the report editor are the same. Pro adds control around them. In practice, the differences that matter to agencies are:

  • Team workspaces. Reports and data sources belong to a shared workspace instead of to one person's Google account.
  • Ownership by project. Assets sit inside your Google Cloud organisation, not under an individual who may leave.
  • Access management. Permissions can be managed with Google Cloud IAM and groups, which is easier to audit than sharing links.
  • Scheduled delivery. More flexible scheduling options for sending reports to clients.
  • Support. Access to Google Cloud support channels, which the free tool does not have.
  • Governance integrations. Audit logs and data catalogue links for teams that need them.

Google also adds AI features to the Pro tier from time to time. Do not base a purchase on those until you have tried them on your own data.

What Pro does not do: it does not make slow dashboards fast, fix wrong numbers, or replace a data model. A report that disagrees with the CRM will still disagree on Pro.

The maths for an agency

Take an illustrative price of $9 per user per project per month.

Setup Users Projects Monthly cost Annual cost
One shared project, small team 5 1 $45 $540
One shared project, mid-sized team 15 1 $135 $1,620
One project per client, 3 people each 3 10 $270 $3,240
Same, 20 clients 3 20 $540 $6,480

The last row is the sum of the rows above and is shown only for scale. No single agency runs all four setups.

The pattern is clear. Cost grows with the number of projects, not with the number of reports. A single shared project keeps Pro cheap. Project-per-client isolation is cleaner for access control but multiplies the licence count.

The cost you compare it with

The licence is rarely the real comparison. Compare it with these:

  1. Hours lost to access problems. Count how many times a month someone asks for access, loses a report after a colleague leaves, or re-links a data source.
  2. Hours spent on manual delivery. If an account manager exports PDFs every Monday, price that time.
  3. Risk of ownership. A report owned by a personal account can disappear with that account. Estimate what rebuilding a client's key dashboard costs.

If those three add up to more than the licence bill, Pro is cheap. If they add up to almost nothing, it is a luxury.

When the upgrade pays off, and when it does not

It usually pays off when

  • You have staff turnover or freelancers. Ownership by project removes the risk of a departing person taking dashboards with them.
  • Clients ask about security. Auditable access through Cloud IAM is easier to defend in a procurement questionnaire than a list of shared links.
  • You manage many client dashboards. Team workspaces stop the sprawl of reports in personal drives.
  • Reports are a contractual deliverable. When a broken dashboard has a cost, support and governance are worth money.

It usually does not pay off when

  • You have a handful of clients and one or two builders. Free Looker Studio with a shared agency account may be enough.
  • The real problem is data quality. If numbers do not match the CRM, the fix is in the pipeline and the data model, and Pro will not change that.
  • Reports are one-off. A short project with a few viewers does not need governance.
  • You plan project-per-client with many small clients. The licence count may exceed the value of each account.

Check these things before you buy

Run through this list in one afternoon:

  1. Confirm the current rate and billing terms in the Google Cloud console, including any minimum commitment.
  2. Decide the project structure first. One shared project or one per client changes the bill more than any other decision.
  3. List who needs a licence. Builders and editors, yes. Check whether viewers need one in your sharing model.
  4. Trial it on one client. Move a single real dashboard into a team workspace and test sharing, scheduling and permissions.
  5. Write down the trigger. For example: "We upgrade when we have more than N client dashboards or when a client requires audited access."
  6. Review after a quarter. Compare the licence cost with the hours it saved.

If you also pay for connectors or a warehouse, put the Pro licence next to them in one reporting cost line. It is easier to judge a $45 licence in the context of a $500 stack than on its own.

FAQ

How much does Looker Studio Pro cost per month?

It is billed per user, per Google Cloud project, per month. The list price at the time of writing was around $9 per user per project. Confirm the current figure in the Google Cloud console, because prices and terms can change.

Is Looker Studio Pro the same as Looker?

No. Looker Studio Pro is the paid tier of Looker Studio, with team workspaces and admin controls. Looker is a separate enterprise BI platform with custom pricing. If you are asking how much Looker costs, you need a quote from Google.

Do all my clients need a Pro licence to view reports?

That depends on how you share content and how your organisation is configured. Test it with one client before you roll out. Do not assume that every viewer needs a paid seat, and do not assume they never do.

Can I stay on the free version of Looker Studio as an agency?

Yes, many agencies do. The risk is ownership and access: reports tied to personal accounts, and sharing managed through links. If you can live with that, free is fine.

Will Pro fix dashboards that do not match the CRM?

No. Mismatches come from tracking, joins and attribution rules. Pro changes who can manage and access reports, not how the numbers are calculated.
